FUND-RAISING
WITH THE COOKBOOK MARKETPLACE |
 |
 |
FRP's new fund-raising brochure is
now available. This is a great tool for letting others know that your book can
be used, along with our entire catalog collection, for nonprofit groups to
raise funds for their own organizations. Everyone knows someone who needs to
raise funds! Our program has been used by 4-H clubs, school PTA's, Boys &
Girls Clubs, and many Junior League organizations! We've heard of quite a few
Junior Leagues that hosted an "in-home party" by preparing samples
from various titles from our catalog and then taking orders for the
books
with great success! This program is especially useful in purchasing
those titles that are not available through swaps with other Leagues. You sell
the titles at full retail and keep 40% of the profit - NO RISK
NO
RETURNS! This is a really easy system! To request a brochure or for more
information, contact Anne Pritchard via email at
apritchard@frpbooks.com or 1-888-795-0632.

DISTRIBUTION
TIP OF THE MONTH |
 |
 |
|
Broadening Your Title Beyond The
State Borders
The bookstore buyers that we work with
are very specific as far as titles go with regard
to the regional states they serve. If you want to
get your title some "national" placements outside
your home state, you will have to put forth a little
extra effort.
Besides having to work with a master
distributor who would probably have a "returnable
policy," you can build a presence outside your own
state by having friends and family members in other
areas visit their local bookstores and put in a special
order request. Tell them which bookstore chains currently
carry your title in your state, and ask them to target
those specifically since your title is already set
up in the company's distribution system. Be sure they
mention to the local store manager that the title
is available through the company's distribution center
which will make for easy ordering on their end.

PR - It Works!!!
t's time to plan your cookbook's 2005
public relations campaign. The best way to do this
is to pull out a calendar and mark events which you
might be able to position your cookbook. Look at traditional
and not-so-traditional dates. Some events like National
Cherry Month or National Honey Month are a great way
to position your book for success. Press releases,
sent on a regular basis, should be part of your overall
marketing plan. FRP suggests sending at least one
release each quarter. Plan press releases that contain
menus (with recipes from your book or books) for special
occasions, such as the Super Bowl, graduation parties,
or Labor Day picnics. Pick different angles, and use
different hooks. Make the release appropriate for
the publication/media outlet you are targeting. To
save time, press releases can be written ahead of
time, and then all you need to do is send them out
in a timely fashion.
Here are a few guidelines for writing
an effective press release:
- Refer to your back cover copy for some guidance
on describing your book.
- Include the most important information in the
first paragraph. Include who, what, when, where,
and why.
- Include recipes when appropriate.
- Use active verbs, consistent grammar, and proper
spelling.
- List the contact person, telephone number,
and e-mail address at the top. This helps the
recipient to direct questions or clarifications
to the right person.
- Don't forget to include the retail price, information
on how to order the book, and where it is available.
Any PR you can create for your cookbook
is going to far outweigh any paid advertising. Here's
an example: Each year, here at our offices in Nashville,
we have a discount cookbook sale that is open to the
public, as well as employees. Press releases announcing
the event were sent to local media outlets. The event
information ran three times in our local paper,
including one appearance on the front page of the
"Living" section. Over forty-percent of the non-employee
orders were a result of the customer reading about
the sale in the newspaper. PR - it works!

Currently, the agenda begins with registration on
Monday, April 11, at 11:30 a.m., and the first session
opens at 1:00 p.m. The final session wraps up on Tuesday,

Remember to Say Thank You!
During this time of year, when everyone is so busy
and running in ten different directions, don't forget
to take a minute and say thank you. Say thank you
to people like:
- the committee volunteers who came in and gift-wrapped
50 cases of books over the weekend
- the staff person in the office who answers the
phone and takes cookbook orders each day
- the webmaster who helps work out the kinks on
your webpage so online ordering can happen
- the League members who continue to buy and buy
cookbooks year after year
- the customers at special events who buy your
cookbook for just one single recipe
- the vendors you work with who assist you all
throughout the year
- the wholesale buyers who continue to work with
you and order your books regularly
- the board and leadership of the League - without
their backing, it would be a tough road
- the new League friends you've made throughout
this cookbook experience
- the UPS or FedEx delivery person who brings
new shipments upon your request
- your friends and family who were guinea pigs
throughout the recipe-sampling process
- your immediate family who have given their help
and support so that you can be a part of this
wonderful and meaningful project
Remember, what you do DOES make a difference in
the lives of people in and around your community.
Thanks on behalf of the Marketing and Distribution
team at FRP for what you do, not only for your Junior
League and the cookbook committee, but also the
projects, agencies, and organizations that you support
now and all throughout the year.
