Cookbooks and the Economy

Can the current state of our economy help to increase your cookbook sales?

As Americans keep a watchful eye on the state of our economy, we are buckling down and making some necessary adjustments to our lifestyle habits. Cookbooks have weathered some difficult economic times in the past, and statistics show an increase in cookbook sales the first half of 2008. It is expected that this trend will continue. When the going gets tough, we want to celebrate our family, at home with the foods we know and love. In marketing your cookbooks, consider the trends and look at the unique selling features of your cookbook. Put together a marketing campaign to let your community know about your book and what it can do for them. Contact local media outlets and tie your cookbook into what is happening in the news lately. Click here to read about a few newsworthy trends to consider.

FRP Cookbook University Wrap-Up

About sixty self-publishers from nineteen states gathered at Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, for FRP Cookbook University on September 30 and October 1. There they learned about all aspects of self-publishing a cookbook—from development to marketing to distribution. Attendees enjoyed networking with other attendees and listening to guest speakers such as cookbook authors Michael Saxer and Holly Clegg, as well as Internet marketing expert Penny C. Sansevieri.

Here’s what a few of our attendees had to say about their time at FRP Cookbook University:

“I can't tell you how much we benefited from coming to FRP Cookbook University. We both really feel like we have a good hold on the process and have the knowledge to make a wildly successful book. It was such a pleasure to put a face with all the people we will be working with throughout the process, and we are looking forward to our finished product! We feel we have made the best decision on working with your company to create a lasting piece for our school. It was such a wonderful bonus too to meet others who have gone through or are going through the process as well.” – Shannon Gwynn, Kerr-Vance Academy

“I would like to thank FRP for their fabulous presentation. There is so much that FRP does for us and I'm thankful to be able to work with Bill Branch and his colleagues. The best part about Cookbook U was meeting people from FRP and other League members. Members offered so many insights into how their Leagues operate and what we could be doing differently.” – Sara Taylor, Junior League of Chicago

I love to have friends over for dinner, but I confess I hate the dreaded dilemma that arises about what I will fix for dinner. When I stumbled upon this recipe in the Junior League of Nashville’s Notably Nashville, I knew I had my “go-to” recipe for company. This recipe is so delicious and easy. I ask my husband to whip up some homemade salsa and guacamole to make our dinner complete. And I love the question that arises at the end of the evening when my guests ask, “Can I have this recipe?” Enjoy!

Creamy Chicken Enchiladas

1 onion, chopped

1 tablespoon butter

1 (4-ounce) can chopped green chiles

3½ cups chopped cooked chicken

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

8 (8-inch) flour tortillas

16 ounces (4 cups) shredded Monterey Jack cheese

2 cups heavy cream

1 (7-ounce) can salsa verde (optional)

Sauté the onion in the butter in a large skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add the green chiles and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in the chicken and cream cheese. Cook until the cream cheese melts, stirring constantly.

Arrange the tortillas on a work surface and spoon 2 to 3 tablespoons of the chicken mixture down the center of each tortilla. Roll the tortillas to enclose the filling and arrange seam side down in a lightly greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the Monterey Jack cheese and drizzle with the cream.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes or until bubbly and light brown. Serve with the salsa (optional).

The Historical League, publishers of the award-winning cookbook Tastes & Treasures, recently blogged about their attendance at FRP Cookbook University. Read about it at www.tastestreasures.blogspot.com.

The San Antonio Express-News recently featured a Q & A column with Lemma Nite, a cookbook collector with more than 12,000 in her collection. When asked what one of her recent favorites was, she answered, “Down Home Delicious by Peggy Touchtone Sholly. The author grew up in the South. It has a lot of Creole recipes.”  When asked about her favorite community cookbooks, she replied, “Flavors by the San Antonio Junior League, Celebrate San Antonio! by the San Antonio Junior Forum, Austin Junior League's Necessities and Temptations. I often give that to brides because it has good cooking information as well as good recipes.”

The News-Star (Monroe, Louisiana) just featured an article on the Junior League of Monroe’s brand new cookbook, Cooking in High Cotton.

Holly Clegg's new cookbook, Holly Clegg’s trim&TERRIFIC Gulf Coast Favorites, was featured in an article on www.2theadvocate.com on Oct 9th. She recently promoted it on Talk of the Town (Nashville, TN) then in Boulder, CO where she participated in a book signing at Peppercorn.

Congratulations to the Junior League of Annapolis! Their cookbook, A Thyme to Entertain, was just named the official cookbook of the city of Annapolis!
