The Importance of Book Reviews

Having your book reviewed by a publication or on a Web site can bring you more sales than traditional advertising with less cost involved. Click here to read what a few authorities on book publishing have to say about book reviews and why they help sell books.

HOT TIP—With the holidays coming up, more people will be shopping on line. Have family and friends write reviews on any on-line site that carries your book, such as Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Hastings, or The Cookbook Marketplace. Many people read these reviews and use them in the decision-making process.

How to Get Great Recipes for Your Group's Cookbook

Everyone has a storehouse of great recipes they're excited to share. The way your committee asks for those recipes can dramatically affect what you get. And of course, the recipes sell the book, so asking is the answer.

Congratulations to several FRP publishers who were recently honored by the 2007 DIY BOOK FESTIVAL with awards in the cookbook category, with honorable mentions:

There is great news from the Junior League of Lake Charles, Louisiana! Their new cookbook, Marshes to Mansions, arrived at the League house only a month ago, and they have sold 4,607 books (2,800 purchased by the membership)! They offered 8 retail stores in the area an exclusive for the first month, and they have sold over 800 books so far. The League also did a blitz week and approached 70 retail stores in the area, opening 10 accounts on the spot with others committing to place an order before the holidays! In addition, a new corporate account wants to purchase books for one of their bank account promotions! They plan to purchase about 100 books to start and give away a cookbook for every woman who opens an account. The committee is having a blast, and Table Talk can't wait to get another update for next month!

The Cooks Canvas 2, the new cookbook from the Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, will be featured in November and December (3-5 times a week) on a program called Let’s Read, seen on The Learning Network locally in Wilmington, NC. (Below is a photo from the taping.) The show features local, regional, and national best-selling authors and their work. The Cooks Canvas 2 was the first cookbook featured on the program in its nine-year existence. Hosted by Betty Ann Sanders, the episodes promote The Cook's Canvas 2 as the perfect gift for the holidays, as well as the museum’s children's programs and volunteers. Food was prepared from the 8 categories in the book and talked about. The group has sold their first 1,000 books and has a Web site, http://www.cookscanvas.com/, to promote the title. The Cook’s Canvas 2 was also featured in a local bookseller
e-newsletter and in encore magazine, a publication in Wilmington, NC

Cooking Danish by Stig Hansen was featured in The Minot Daily News on October 12, 2007.

Shall We Gather, the new cookbook from the Trinity Episcopal Church in Wetumpka, AL, will be featured in the November issue of Alabama Living, the rural electric magazine that goes to approximately 375,000 households in Alabama.

To celebrate the second printing of Simply Sarasota, the Junior League of Sarasota had a celebration at Mattison's Steakhouse at the Plaza on October 23, 2007. Chef Paul Mattison prepared selections from the book. The group also held an in-store tasting at Denuo on October 18, 2007

Holly Clegg (author of Eating Well Through Cancer) will be featured in Savvy and Sage magazine, which will have local issues this month in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Monroe, Shreveport, Lake Charles (all Louisiana cities), and Jackson, Mississippi. Each location also distributes 15,000 copies with over 10,000 in each market being by direct mail.

The Junior League of Milwaukee is going to have some great publicity coming up. Their cookbook, An Occasion to Gather, is going to be featured in Today's Wisconsin Woman in the holiday section entitled "gifts for the holidays." This free publication geared toward Milwaukee area women can be found in grocery stores, Walgreens, etc.

Margaret Dickenson (author of Margaret’s Table) will make a guest appearance on CTV (Canada AM national morning show) on November 5, 2007. In addition, Ms. Dickenson has been invited to represent Canada at a Korean Food Workshop to be held in Seoul and Jeonju, Korea, from November 16 to 19, 2007. Sponsored by the Korean Foundation and the Korean Society of Food and Culture, 15 media food writers and culinary experts from around the world, with an interest in Korean food, have been selected to participate. This unique workshop will include presentations on Korean Royal cuisine and traditional regional food. And, last, but not least, the Cordon d’Or—Gold Ribbon International Cookbook and Culinary Arts Awards has selected Margaret’s Table as Best Cookbook on Entertaining!  Congratulations!!
