January 2009

We apologize for the delay on the delivery of this issue.

Got resolutions? How about a little resolve.

Whether your resolution was to hit the gym or to secure ten more retail accounts for your cookbook, you’re not alone if you've already cheated or shunned your 2009 resolutions.

Resolve, however, is quite different from a resolution. Resolve is more a personality trait than a passing fad. Resolve is long-term dedication and effort to achieve many successes, large and small, and resolve must be present 365 days a year if you want to earn successful cookbook sales.

Click here to read about FRP client Pam Lyles (author of Da Cajn Critter) who exemplifies how resolve can result in successes for an independent publisher.

from Alison Nash, Copy Editor

Colder weather means two things at my house: football and chili. My husband and I look forward to chili season all year and have acquired quite a collection of chili recipes so we can rotate and have chili every weekend without getting bored. With the Super Bowl fast approaching, our choice is simple. Whenever we want a traditional, hearty bowl of chili, we go with Lucille’s Chili, found in Heart & Soul from the Junior League of Memphis. It’s tasty alone, over baked potatoes, on hot dogs, and even reheated the next day (if we’re lucky enough to have leftovers). We make a few changes to suit our taste, like adding extra cumin and about half a bottle of beer, then serve it with plenty of Cheddar cheese, sour cream, and chopped onions. If someone is hesitant about adding the jalapeño, leave it out and serve it as a topping instead. Regardless of who wins the big game, everybody goes home happy!

Lucille’s Chili

Serves 8

2 pounds ground chuck

1 cup chopped onion

¾ cup chopped green or red bell pepper

1 garlic clove, minced (we often add more)

1 (16-ounce) can whole tomatoes, cut up (we buy already diced tomatoes)

1 (16-ounce) kidney beans, drained and rinsed (chili beans are also good)

2 (8-ounce) cans tomato sauce

1 (10-ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chiles

1 jalapeño chile, seeded and chopped (optional)

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 tablespoon snipped fresh oregano, or 1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed

2 teaspoons (or more) ground cumin

1½ teaspoons snipped fresh basil, or ½ teaspoon dried basil, crushed

1½ teaspoons salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

Cook the beef, onion, bell pepper and garlic in a large stockpot until the beef is brown and crumbly; drain well. Add the undrained tomatoes, beans, tomato sauce, undrained tomatoes with green chiles, jalapeño, chili powder, oregano, cumin, basil, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. (This is where we add the beer.) Reduce the heat. Simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Serve with whatever toppings you choose.

Congratulations to Nielsen-Massey! Their cookbook, A Century of Flavor, was named Best Corporate Cookbook in the USA by the Gourmand Cookbook Awards. Also recognized by the Gourmand Cookbook Awards was Recipes Worth Sharing, from FRP Publishing. It was named the Best Fund Raising Book in the USA. Both books will now compete against winners (in other countries in their respective categories) for The Best in the World. The results will be announced in May 2009.

DIY Book Festival Awards

The 2008 DIY Book Festival has named its winners. (For information on these awards, visit their website http://www.diyconvention.com/ .)

Congratulations to everyone involved in these titles.

Linda Mutschler’s new book, Fast Track to Fine Dining, was featured in the Milwaukee (WI) Journal Sentinel on December 10th.

A Century of Flavor, from Nielsen-Massey, was mentioned in the December 10th Milwaukee (WI) Journal Sentinel article mentioned above, as well as in a Chicago Sun-Times article (about easy-to-make edible gifts) on December 21st.

Tastes & Treasures by Historical League, Inc., had a December book signing at Poisoned Pen bookstore in Scottsdale and is now in the gift shop at the Phoenix Zoo as well as the Desert Botanical Gardens. Another store that reorders frequently is called Gifts With A Conscience in Phoenix. They focus on supporting nonprofit organizations around the world and love the recipes and history in this cookbook.

Hinsdale Junior Woman's Club cookbook, Life is Delicious, was featured as one of the "Favorite Cookbooks of 2008" in the Chicago Tribune in the Good Eating section on December 9th. The group had an event in early December with Barnes & Noble in their new Oakbrook Center location, which went well. The store featured the book on a wall display that week and sold a good number of books even before the event. At the event, the group did sell out the store’s inventory (in fact they had to bring in a case from their inventory).

Also included in the “Favorite Cookbooks of 2008" in the December 9th article in the Chicago Tribune was the Junior League of Chicago’s newest cookbook, Peeling the Wild Onion.

Renee Ferguson, author of Talk Turkey to Me, was on Oprah & Friends radio offering tips on how to create the perfect holiday feast.

Holly Clegg, author of Trim & Terrific™ Gulf Coast Favorites and Eating Well Through Cancer was on the 700 Club, December 17, 2008, to talk about healthy eating. Paradise Served, the new cookbook from the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale, was featured in the Food section of the Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, FL) on December 18, 2008.

Sheila Thomas, Executive Editor of Recipes Worth Sharing, was featured in The Collierville (TN) Independent on December 31, 2008.

The Junior League of Olympia, Inc., has been busy promoting its new cookbook, Northwest Inspirations. They received their cookbooks the first week of October and are thrilled with the success they have had so far. They have reaped the benefits of a release just before the holidays.

In early November, they had a cooking class at Bayview School of Cooking. League members prepared Hearty Slow-Cooked Lamb & Mushroom Sauce (a Kathy Casey recipe), Cranberry-Stuffed Winter Squash, Pumpkin Pistachio Pear Cake, and Northwest Mulled Wine. Also in November, there was an open house and samples from the cookbook at Drees (a fine home store in Olympia).

In December, cookbook committee members wrapped gifts at Barnes & Noble (for donations to the League). Northwest Inspirations is a featured item in the store. They also held cooking demonstrations at Metropolitan Markets in Tacoma and Federal Way, respectively.
