A Plan, a Cookbook, and a Bit of Passion

The Junior League of Olympia, Inc., released their first cookbook, Northwest Traditions: Flavors of South Puget Sound, in October 2008. They reaped the benefits of a strategic pre-holiday release and have consistently carried out their marketing plan to garner strong early sales. We wanted to tap into their sales and marketing plan details in order to share their success strategies with other FRP publishers. Cookbook Committee Chair Michelle Green and Committee Member Joanna West were so kind as to oblige.

Congratulations to these FRP self-publishers on their new books:

Correction. We apologize for listing the title of this book incorrectly in last month’s issue.

In recognition of February being “American Heart Month,” this month’s Recipe Worth Sharing is from A Taste of the Good Life: From the Heart of Tennessee, published by Saint Thomas Heart Institute. The recipe for Yogurt Brownies was submitted by Tom Anderson who was (at that time) Director of the Cardiac Rehab program at Saint Thomas Heart Institute. He was (and is) an exceptional tri-athlete, having participated in the grueling Hawaii Ironman competition. He continues to be a good friend and training mentor. This is a favorite for my wife and me from this book. Who said what tastes good has to be bad for you (or complicated to make)?

Yogurt Brownies

1 - 20 ounce package (567g) double-fudge brownie mix

½ cup plain nonfat yogurt

Combine the brownie mix, yogurt and the amount of water specified on the package in a bowl and mix well; omit the eggs and oil. Spread in a baking pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. (You can use an 8x8, 9x9, or 11x7 inch pan depending on how thick you like your brownies.) Bake using the package directions or until the edges pull from the sides of the pan. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars. Yield: 15 (1-brownie) servings.

Get this recipe and more ideas to help you eat well by purchasing a copy of A Taste of the Good Life: From the Heart of Tennessee. Save 40% off the retail price when you order by February 28, 2009. Go to www.cookbookmarketplace.com and enter promo code TT-FEB09 when checking out.

Junior League of Northwest Arkansas held a 1st Birthday Bash celebrating the one-year anniversary of the launch of their cookbook, Add Another Place Setting on January 30. There was also a silent auction including unique culinary-inspired items. More than 4,500 copies of Add Another Place Setting have been sold since its debut.

Sheila Thomas, Executive Editor of Recipes Worth Sharing, appeared on QVC on Sunday, January 25, 2009, to sell copies of the cookbook. QVC sold out of their stock (all 4,000 copies) in approximately 3 minutes.
