The Successful Sales of a Existing Cookbook

Notably Nashville, the latest cookbook from the Junior League of Nashville, was originally published in 2003 and has been reprinted once. After a slowdown, this title has experienced a sales resurgence. The League reports that by the end of May, their sales will have increased $40,000 from last year’s total sales! We wanted to find out what the Junior League of Nashville was doing to “breathe life” into this existing cookbook title. Alicia Barker, co-cookbook chairman with the Junior League of Nashville, had the following information to share. Click here to read this valuable Q&A article.

In addition, we will be exhibiting at the Culinary Showcase in Booth 335. These FRP publishers will be signing books at the Cookbook Expo:  Nielsen Massey Vanillas—A Century of Flavor and Patricia McCausland-Gallo—Passion For Coffee.

In addition, the following FRP Publishers will be speakers at the conference:

  • Chef Robert Danhi, Chef Danhi & Company
  • Dickie Brennan, Palace Cafe, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, and Bourbon House Seafood

As part of the conference, a Hard-Hat Tour of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum will take place.  FRP is a sponsor of the Museum, which is slated to open this summer. FRP staff members will be on hand selling copies of Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours, Recipes from New Orleans That Louis Armstrong Loved, printed in donation by FRP.

FRP will travel to San Diego, CA to attend the Association of Junior Leagues (AJLI) Annual Conference, April 30–May 3. FRP sponsors the opening reception at the conference and is an exhibitor with the largest collection of Junior League cookbooks in the country. Roger Conner and Mary Margaret Andrews will facilitate a workshop on cookbooks on Friday, May 2, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Dave Kempf will present the prestigious FRP Junior League Cookbook award with a $5,000 check for the winner.

FRP will also travel to Birmingham, AL to exhibit at the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries (NAJA), May 2–4. We will be on hand as FRP client NAJA unveils the cover of its new cookbook, Silver Spoons and Blueberry Afternoons, to their membership. This will kick off the presale campaign and create enthusiasm for the book, which is due out in August.

If you are at any of the above events, please stop and say "hi" if you see a representative from FRP.

Congratulations to author Peggy Sholly! Her new cookbook, Down Home Delicious, was designated with the Gold Award in the Cooking & Food category from the Mom's Choice Awards®, which honor excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services.

FRP publishers Holly Clegg (Eating Well Through Cancer) and Margaret Dickenson (Margaret’s Table) were featured in an article about entertaining written by Susan Peters, which appeared in the on-line magazine ShowCook. More good news for Holly Clegg: She also was recently on the nationally televised morning show Fox & Friends to share ideas for Easter brunch and Easter dinner.

Mardi Gras to Mistletoe from the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and Marshes to Mansions from the Junior League of Lake Charles were featured in The Shreveport Times on April 2, 2008. The books also were featured in The Times-Picayune (New Orleans). This article included the complete list of Tabasco Community Cookbook Award Winners.

The Chicago Tribune
also recently published an article on the Tabasco Awards. Mentioned in that article were The Bells are RingingMission San Juan Capistrano Women’s Guild and Mardi Gras to Mistletoe—Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Mission San Juan Capistrano Women’s Guild reports that two cases of books were sold as a result of this PR. (The article was picked up by several newspapers nationwide.) Guild members were also interviewed on KOCE, the local PBS station on March 30.

Due to efforts by FRP Publicity Services, Patricia McCausland-Gallo recently signed copies of Passion for Coffee in Napa, CA, and Baton Rouge, LA, on her first stint of promoting the book in the U.S. The Napa book signing was held at Copperfield’s Books. This signing yielded great publicity for Passion for Coffee, as Copperfield’s is a location that does a great amount of their own PR for every event they host. This sort of mutually beneficial cooperative effort is key when considering a venue for a book signing. The Napa Valley Register ran a press release on the event as well, informing more than 16,000 people about the book signing and Passion for Coffee.

The Baton Rouge book signing will be held at Brew Ha-Ha on April 15th, a coffee shop that often hosts artists’ galleries, author readings, and book signings. While not a traditional bookstore, this venue was a choice location to present Passion for Coffee. McCausland-Gallo’s April 15th appearance on 2une In, a Baton Rouge morning show, the morning before the signing, was timely publicity for both Passion for Coffee and the Brew Ha-Ha event.
