Avoiding Plagiarism

"I found your speech to be good and original. However, the part that was original was not good. And the part that was good was not original."  — Samuel Johnson, to one of his students

"I found this really great Web site."  — Cookbook Sidebar Chairperson

There are some wonderful resources available today, both in print and on the Internet.

As you are collecting material for the non-recipe text in your cookbook, you may run across something so fabulous—a clever turn of phrase, perhaps, or a novel idea—that you simply must use it in the book. HALT!!! If that material has been copyrighted (and it most likely has), you may be about to become a plagiarist.

Lemongrass & Limes from Naam Pruitt was reviewed on KTVU.com (Oakland, CA) in the “On The Bookshelf” column by J. Scott Wilson.

The Junior League of Austin is excited to share that its “Governor's Mansion Summer Peach Tea Punch” from their cookbook Austin Entertains was featured in the July Issue of Southern Living on page 108!

Island Thyme from the Bermuda Junior Service League has received a mention on www.bermuda-online.org.

The Woman’s Exchange of Memphis’ cookbook, Compliments Of, is going to be featured in Culture and Leisure Magazine's fall issue.

The Junior League of Birmingham recently had their annual placement fair, which is part of a larger event called "Volunteer Birmingham," where many nonprofit and charitable organizations in Birmingham host booths to publicize their activities and recruit new members. The Junior League members presold 485 cases of their newest cookbook, Tables of Content, due out October 2006. The most amazing piece of this story is that they did this in only 10 hours. The case price was discounted to $120 per case and the gross revenues came in at $58,200. They are printing 30,000 copies and the cookbook will retail for $29.95. Congratulations on a wonderful start in the presales campaign. Knowing that nearly 5,000 books (16% of their entire run) are already spoken for (and paid for) is a great accomplishment.

Are you an FRP Publisher with good news to share about your cookbook? We want to hear about any media coverage, successful events, goals reached, etc. Please send your news to marketing@frpbooks.com, and we will put it in the next issue of Table Talk.

Award Stickers:

If your title has won an award this year, be sure you take full advantage of the award and have your inventory stickered. Contact your distributors and wholesale accounts to see how many copies they currently have on hand and offer to send them stickers which they can apply to the books. You will then need to address having your remaining inventory of books stickered. Simply placing award stickers in the box along with the books being shipped doesn't ensure that the stickers will be applied once they arrive at the stores. Better to have them applied yourself—after all, you worked really hard for that award, so make it count at the retail level!
