DISTRIBUTION
TIP
(Part 2 of
2) |
|
 |
|
Here are more
thoughts based on our experiences at the five different
consumer-based shows where we exhibited in 2005. We hope
you find this helpful as you plan your 2006 events for
selling at consumer-based shows:
• OFFER
MULTIPLE TITLES FOR SALE:
If you want to have a wider selection of titles
to sell during your event in addition to your own title,
you can easily set up a Fund-raising Account for
nonprofit groups through the Cookbook Marketplace and
purchase books at 40% off retail to have on hand to sell
during your event. Anne Pritchard will be glad to
consult with you on other titles which would do well for
your area or event. Visit our Web site for an
informational brochure and the necessary forms to get
your account set up: https://www.frpbooks.com/ store/store_fundraising.aspx.
Contact Anne Pritchard for further consultation on using
our fund-raising program for your group’s benefit at apritchard@frpbooks.com
or 888-795-0632.
Special Note:
We have found that for consumer-based events, you need
to offer a discount to get any real sales activity. Even
a 10% discount is better than full retail, which the
consumer pays in local area stores. We tried anywhere
from 30% to 40%, so you'll need to figure out what makes
the most sense for your financial
situation.
•
FOOD...FOOD…FOOD! It’s always
helpful to have a food tasting sample at your table area
to help sell cooking titles. You need to check with the
event manager prior to attending to find out if there
are any rules or restrictions regarding food service, as
some states have very strict guidelines for public
events. • FREE STUFF: Some
of the consumer shows are structured in such a way that
once the consumers have paid the entry fee (anywhere
from $5 to $15 just to get in the door), they are
sometimes mainly concerned with getting the FREE stuff
and not so much about actually buying products on
display during the show. Do your research on how the
show is being advertised and know what the advertising
thrust is towards the consumer.
Some of the
shows are advertised towards a “come and see/taste
products to become aware of and then go purchase in the
local area,” while others are “come and shop and
purchase during the show.” You definitely want to be
sure you are exhibiting at shows that are the
shop-and-spend-during-the-show style, but it doesn't
hurt to have some kind of “freebie” item to give away,
too! Even something as simple as a bookmark,
refrigerator magnet, recipe card, post card, measuring
spoon, or a pen (any of these can be developed with your
group name printed on them) will be appreciated by
consumers at any type of event! Plus, it’s another way
to keep the name of your group in front of them once
they return home and use the freebie
item. | |

Make MY
FAVORITE RECIPES
Yours
Looking to add spark to
your fund-raising program, or to give a unique gift for
bridal showers, graduation, and special birthdays? The
newly redesigned FRP book, My
Favorite Recipes ($12.95 suggested retail), is
a creative and unique recipe journal that shares family
and community traditions.
Published by FRP in December 2005, this
recipe journal allows people to create their own
personal cookbook, with room for up to 120 recipes,
memories, and personal notes. Have trouble remembering
which recipe came from which cookbook? The recipe
finder is a handy reference guide for your
collection of cookbooks. You will also find the
substitutions and equivalents charts helpful, as well as
the freezer storage information. With interest in
scrapbooking and journaling on the rise, it is
perfect for home cooks to add their recipes, notes, and
even photos to this colorful, spiral-bound book. Family
and friends can contribute their favorite recipes to
create a special gift for brides, young people facing
their first kitchen, or anytime as a pick-me-up to let
someone know how much you care. No kitchen shower would
be complete without a cookbook, but having a collection
of recipes from family and friends adds a personal
touch.
My
Favorite Recipes is a great item to add to your
fund-raising efforts. Attractively priced for resale, it
can be added to special occasion packages that raise
customers’ total purchase with something useful and
attractive.
Since this book is published by FRP, it
fell to the Marketing Department to create a sales plan
for it. A significant order from our parent company,
Great American Opportunities, for their catalog has
played a major role in the success of the book. Sheila
Thomas, who runs FRP’s New Market Development, presented
the book to Great American before it was published:
“Great American Opportunities has a good track
record with previous editions of this recipe journal,
and they've sold more than 100,000 copies of similar
products. Having an order from them before we printed
and published was a big help in forming a blueprint for
success.”
Looking for a new party idea? Buy several
copies and have people add three or four recipes (or
more) and then trade, passing them along as in a white
elephant gathering. Need a hostess gift? Give her your
favorite recipes from the last party you threw, with
room for her to add her favorites. Planning a holiday
cookie exchange or soup exchange? Compile all the
recipes in this handy journal. Try it for your next
supper club meeting, or use it to record recipes from
restaurants you admire.

Favorite Recipes today by ordering online

Margaret and
Larry Dickenson Win International Recipe
Competition Margaret Dickenson has once again been
recognized for her recipe development skills. On
December 8, 2005, in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the
Cordon d’Or—Gold Ribbon International Cookbook and
Culinary Arts’ Awards, Margaret won both “Recipe of the
Year” (published) and “Recipe of the Year”
(unpublished). Cranberry Nut Clusters appeared in the
January 2005 issue of The Diplomat and
International Canada. Cordon d’Or also
recognized Margaret’s husband, Larry Dickenson, for his
photos of the two award-winning recipes. Since his
retirement from the Canadian government, Larry has been
working closely with Margaret on her culinary projects
and has developed a serious interest in photography.
Margaret Dickenson is the author of the international
award-winning cookbook, From the Ambassador’s
Table, and the creator/host
of the international award-winning TV series,
Margaret’s Sense of Occasion and Margaret’s
Entertaining Minutes.
Par

This “Dish is”
delicious! Since its launch in mid-September 2005, more
than 13,000 copies of Dallas
Dish have been sold. The Junior League of
Dallas Cookbook Committee has been cooking on high,
taking Dallas
Dish on a tour of Texas and beyond. This
cookbook, filled with spectacular recipes and
photographs, has received an overwhelmingly positive
response from the news media. Dallas
Dish has been featured on CBS's Positively
Texas, ABC's Good Morning Texas, NBC's
First News at Four, and WB’s DFW
Closeup, to name a few. Dallas
Dish also made a guest appearance on Comcast's
culinary show, Cookin' with Carol. To date,
this beautiful new book has been featured in more than
twenty-five publications, including The Dallas
Morning News, D Magazine,
PaperCity, Modern Luxury, Park Cities
People, and The Houston Chronicle. In
addition to the media attention, Dallas
Dish has also captured the attention of local
and national retailers. Central Market and
Williams-Sonoma are selling the cookbook, supporting its
sales with special tastings and in-store promotional
events, but you can order yours when you log on to www.jld.net. Sales and
customer comments say it all—this “Dish” has the perfect
recipe for success!
Author Joan

MEDIA
MATTERS
It seems every
day there’s a new report being issued on Americans and
nutrition, and the reason we hear about many of them is
because the media believes we are interested. More than
just the five to seven servings of fresh fruits and
vegetables the surgeon general recommends as part of a
balanced healthy diet, nutrition is all about cooking.
More and more, people are looking at how food is
prepared as a way to increase flavor, seal in nutrition,
and shave off fat and calories.
Nearly every
cookbook has recipes that can qualify for a pitch to
media interested in health and nutrition. Even magazines
that are not devoted to health and nutrition will do a
story on the topic if it fits in with their readers.
Here are five tips on pitching your book to fit into a
health and nutrition story:
1.
DON’T make unfounded health claims. There’s nothing
wrong with including an article from or quoting
creditable reports to support your pitch. This shows you
know what you’re talking about.
2. DO
include the recipes, and try to create a whole meal. The
best meal, in addition to being nutritious, is
family-friendly and done in less than thirty minutes
without using packaged foods. Point out these elements
in your pitch—DON'T assume it’s obvious.
3.
DON’T just tell the media that your cookbook is healthy
even if that is the focus of your book; explain what
kind of health issues the book addresses and show how
your selected recipes address that concern.
4. DO
pitch now for March, which is National Nutrition
Month!
5.
DON’T forget breakfast: studies have shown that eating a
healthy breakfast gives us more energy throughout the
day, helps metabolism, and is essential to meeting
dietary guidelines. Quick and easy, made-from-scratch
are big here!
