ISBN (International Standard Book Number) - What You Need to Know

We recommend all publishers read this article!

Each book that is produced and sold through the normal channels within the book trade is required to have its own ISBN. This is similar to Social Security in that each number is unique and individually assigned to each title through R. R. Bowker.

There are a few things that are changing after the first of the year, and this communication will serve as a reminder for these existing procedures plus the new updates. Click here for the entire article.

(The series on Book Production Terminology will continue in the January issue.)

The Junior League of Boston’s new cookbook Boston Uncommon was mentioned in the November 27th issue of the Boston Herald. The League reports that 3,800 books have been sold since October 11. Talbots is carrying the book for a month in 15 area stores and that has been great. A couple of small bookstores are also giving them shelf space. They had a great launch party at the Sam Adams Brewery in late October with 240 attendees.

The Charlotte Observer featured an article, along with recipes from Rose Marie Bratek’s new title, Searching for Watercress, in the November 8th issue.

Betty Sims, author of Southern Scrumptious and Southern Scrumptious Entertains had a busy November, holding cooking classes and book signings in the southern United States, including places like Cartersville, GA; Destin, FL; and Decatur, AL.

Margaret Dickinson, author of Margaret's Table and From the Ambassador’s Table, captured five awards at the Cordon d’Or–Gold Ribbon International Annual Cookbooks & Culinary Arts Awards. In the cookbook category, From the Ambassador's Table was selected for the Best “20th Century Cookbook” award, as well as the Best “Cookbook Cover & Title” award for a cookbook published between 1985 and 2006. In the Culinary Arts’ category, Margaret and her husband, Larry, who did all the photography, received three additional awards—“Culinary Masterpiece: A Three Course Dinner Menu”, “Plan a Menu” and Best “Published Recipe” Award (with photograph). Congratulations!

The Grand Rapids Press mentioned the Junior League of Grand Rapids’ cookbook, Grand Temptations, in an article about local cookbooks on November 8th.

Naam Pruitt’s cookbook, Lemongrass & Limes was mentioned, with a recipe, in The Daily Dispatch (Douglas, AZ) on November 7th.

Do you need your own publicist to handle communicating with the media, getting them the material they need, asking for press clippings, and scheduling events?

Most professional PR firms charge upwards of $10,000 for just a few months, and won't provide many services, like shipping review copies, scheduling in-store events, or promoting you to festivals and conferences.

Let us prepare a proposal for your complete marketing and publicity services now. If we reach an agreement before December 31, 2006, you'll receive the discounted 2006 rate of $7,500 for 2007 services valued at $13,000. (NOTE: Term of agreement is one year from book-to-client date, or for books that are already available, one year from signing of the agreement.)
