In honoring the Louisiana climate that’s perfect for a garden year-round and the joy that comes from planting roots and enriching one’s home with a garden, the Friends of Magnolia Mound Plantation have re-printed A Year in the Garden: A Monthly Gardening Guide for the Gulf South.
The Friends of Magnolia Mound are a group of devoted Baton Rouge residents who have worked hard over decades to preserve the rich history of the Magnolia Mound Plantation. Aside from the house itself, the grounds of the Magnolia Mound Plantation in Baton Rouge are a close replica of what the working plantation looked like in the 1790s and early 1800s. With a carriage house, pigeonnier and open-hearth kitchen, the plantation is a living history lesson for local students and community groups. The ultimate lagniappe though, is the thriving kitchen garden that is maintained and productive all year long.
The actual garden at the plantation is a site of many cooking and gardening classes, but the Friends of Magnolia Mound have compiled a year’s worth of gardening information and published it in A Year in the Garden, for any gardener to reference at home.
The guide offers monthly advice for which annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables and herb should be planted or transplanted, and how to care for them. A Year in the Garden also features bloom and harvest charts and landscaping tips for the ultimate southern garden and lawn.
Beautiful photos of the plantation grounds and the beautiful possibilities of a southern garden are inspiration throughout the book for any gardener to be vigilant against the often volatile southern climate. The book also recommends hearty azaleas, roses and fruits that can withstand the regional climate.
A Year in the Garden is the ultimate guide for honoring historic roots and planting some new ones as well.
The original version of this book was a joint production of the board of Trustees of Magnolia Mound Plantation and the Baton Rouge Landscape Association, published in 1989, and since sold out. The Friends of Magnolia Mound Plantation worked hard to re-write and redesign the current edition, A Year in the Garden: A Monthly Gardening Guide for the Gulf South (ISBN 978-0-9798812-0-6; $14.95).
